How to connect a laptop to a TV via wifi

The twenty-first century is the century of wireless technology, which is firmly rooted in the lives of all ordinary inhabitants. In large cities, it became difficult to find at least one point that would not be covered by Wi-Fi coverage.

Wi-Fi and TV

Advanced routing technology has gained widespread popularity due to its convenience and versatility. Today it is difficult to imagine at least one apartment that would not be equipped with this technology. Also, Wi-Fi routers did not bypass public places. Access points are located everywhere from suburban train stations to expensive restaurants in the center of the capital. This is not surprising, because the technology of routers is extremely easy to use.

Anyone, even an unprepared user, knows how to connect to an unprotected Wi-Fi access point. It’s easy enough to learn how to configure the router yourself, because you don’t need special education to acquire such skills. Wi-Fi connection also allows you to connect various kinds of devices for sharing. As for setting up routers, the user does not need to have a special skill or education here.

With the development of technology, everyone may need knowledge about configuring devices that support Wi-Fi, because it opens up many functions for sharing various devices. As, for example, the connection of a laptop and a TV, which allows you to broadcast an image from a computer directly to the screen of another device. This is extremely convenient, because in many cases the small screen of the laptop does not allow to satisfy all needs.

For example, the presence of guests at home who are not comfortable watching a new movie on a small computer monitor. In this case, the ideal solution to the problem would be to transfer the image from the laptop screen to the TV screen. More recently, in order to carry out this procedure, it was necessary to use various cables. Starting from the famous "tulips", which through separate wires transmitted image and sound. They were replaced by HDMI technology, which ensured the transmission of better images and sound with just one cable, without many wires.

Today, when every user at home is connected to high-speed Internet, and a Wi-Fi signal is distributed throughout the room, signal transmission via cable is a real atavism.

REFERENCE! There is no need to connect the cable when there is a laptop and a TV, with the ability to connect to a Wi-Fi network. Wireless technology enables these two devices to be switched without a single wire.

In addition to entertainment purposes, the connections of the two devices have practical applications. In some cases, an extra large screen can make it easier. This can be useful for artists of engineers and even musicians who find it much more convenient to mix sound tracks on a large screen than on a small monitor. Using wi-fi, you can duplicate the connection. Duplication allows you to view the picture on multiple screens at once.

It seems extremely difficult for many users to set up two devices wirelessly. However, implementing this method of communication is quite simple and the basic methods for connecting wireless image and sound transmission from a laptop to a TV screen will be presented below.

This article discusses the connection only on the Windows operating system, for owners of Linux or other operating systems other than the Microsoft product, the connection algorithm will be different. There are several basic ways to synchronize the connection between a laptop and a TV via Wi-Fi.

  1. DLNA
  2. WiDi
  3. Wi-Fi adapter.

The choice of connection method depends on the functionality of the devices, their models and hardware capabilities. The more modern the devices, the easier it is to connect them together.

DNLA

To use this connection method, the computer and laptop must be connected to the same router. This is only necessary for older TV models. For more modern devices, such a connection is not required, since the TV itself is able to create a network, and in turn a computer is connected to it.

The first step to connecting is to configure the server. This process is nothing more than the discovery of network access to files and data. In order to carry out this action, simply set the “home” Wi-Fi mode on the computer. After that, the media will become available for viewing on TV.

In order to make accessible absolutely all folders on the laptop, you need to go to "Properties" - "Access" - "Advanced Settings" and put a check mark next to "Open Sharing ...". After that, click OK, and access to all folders will open for TV.

There is a more simplified method for allowing access using Explorer.

It is enough to click the “Network” subfolder in the “This computer” root system, then you need to click on “Network discovery ...” (message from the top) and, following the prompts of the assistant, the user will have access to all folders on the television screen with several successive steps.

REFERENCE! If the message "Network discovery ..." did not appear. This means that access to all folders of the laptop is open on the device.

After connecting DNLA, you can find on the TV options for external connections using the remote control. You can also find the properties and contents of connected devices there. In order to start a video file on an already connected TV, select the desired file, right-click on it and select the "Play to ..." item. Then just select the desired TV device and playback starts.

Not all formats are supported for TV playback, for example, video in MKV format, so before attempting to play, make sure that the format is correct and, if necessary, convert to another.

WiDi

Unlike the previous method, this algorithm does not provide for the connection of shared access to a computer. This carries, as well as obvious disadvantages, and advantages. A definite minus may be the inability to control the player using the remote control from the TV. However, the plus can be the protection of a smart TV from various viruses and malware.

WiDi technology allows you to dub images from a computer screen to a TV. The best interaction between the TV and laptop is observed when the latter is equipped with a Wi-Fi module from Intel. This allows you to provide the most stable pairing without installing additional drivers. However, if it becomes necessary to install additional software, the latest drivers can be downloaded for free on the official Intel website.

In most cases, this will not be necessary if the device was initially sold on Windows 8.1 with a built-in Wi-Fi module. When the system is installed manually, some instability in operation is possible, and it will be necessary to install third-party drivers.

Another important factor is the WiDi function itself in the TV itself. Just a couple of years ago, for such work it was required to equip the TV with an additional adapter, however. modern TVs support this feature by default, since such an adapter is installed during production.

ATTENTION! To connect the TV to the laptop, you need to enable WiDi on the TV itself, and use the additional Intel Wireless Display application on the computer.

Connection is quite simple.

  1. On TV, you should enable Miracast or WiDi support. This is done in the settings.

Reference! If you can’t find this item, then this function is enabled by default and WiFi is turned on enough

  1. We launch the Intel Wireless Display utility and find the device to which the broadcast will be carried out.
  2. To start broadcasting the image on the TV screen after the connection is completed, click on the "Devices" - "Projector" tab and select the desired screen on the last page.

For greater security when establishing a connection, the utility requires confirmation of the PIN code on both devices.

Adapters

In many older TV models, there are no built-in modules that allow switching between a TV device and a laptop. In this situation, special adapters may come to the rescue. One of the most common devices is Google Chromecast, which allows you to connect between devices.

REFERENCE! For fans of the OS on Android, there is an Android Mini PC adapter, and the most practical and universal adapter can be called Intel Compute Stick.

These devices visually resemble an ordinary flash drive. It is enough to insert this device into the USB port of the TV and the screen translation function will become available for any user.

Why not connects

In some situations, communication between the two devices cannot be configured. There are several main causes of these problems.

  1. Your TV does not have the necessary adapters that allow it to connect to a computer. The solution to this problem can be the acquisition of a specialized adapter.
  2. Your PC does not have the necessary software to connect to the TV. This is solved by downloading the necessary software from the official websites of the developer or third-party resources.
  3. When connecting WiDi, there is often a problem finding the TV screen. In this case, the easiest solution is to update the drivers on the computer. If this method does not help, it is possible that the TV does not support this function.

A few words should be said about applications that make it easier to work with wireless media, such as smart TV.

Of the main utilities, it is worth highlighting Share Manager, which works perfectly with devices from Samsung. This is not surprising, because the program was developed by the same company. The utility allows you to use the information on the hard drive of a laptop or PC directly from the TV. For work connection to Wi-FI is required. The application is installed in a couple of clicks.

  1. First you need to download the installer from the official Samsung website.
  2. Run the installer and install the application.
  3. After starting the application, the user will see two windows. In the left will be the folder on your computer’s hard drive with media files. The window on the right will be empty. The user needs to drag the necessary folders from the left window to the right, and then right-click and select the "Share this folder." Then click "Sharing" - "Set device policy." After that, a list of devices available for connection appears. Having chosen the necessary, click OK.
  4. The next step is to click on "Sharing" - "Set the changed state." The update should begin, after which the changes will take effect.
  5. Then you should go to the TV. There you should click "TV Sources" - "PC Share Manager" - "Share Folder". The folders you selected earlier appear on the screen.

The device is ready for use.

Servilio is another free application for comfortable use of DLNA connection technology. An undoubted advantage of this application is the ease of setup and operation, as well as the availability of translation into Russian.

Wireless connection is the most convenient for all users. And we are talking here not only about transmitting images via the WiFi module, but also about other areas of activity. As, for example, it’s no secret to anyone that conventional wired chargers for the phone have already been replaced by wireless charging technology. This makes the use of devices the most comfortable and practical. Such technologies in every home are just another proof that the future has come.
