DIY plywood armchair

A person always strives for comfort, sometimes the simplest thing in a house becomes irreplaceable, such as a chair. Sit with a newspaper or just read a book, or maybe by the fireplace wrapped in a blanket to look at the fire, which can be more pleasant. If sometimes such moments are not enough, it's time to think about purchasing a chair or do it yourself.

There are a lot of modifications of armchairs made of plywood, but all products are divided into two types:

  • rocking chair
  • a chair, a stool.

To the first one you can assign all products with a swinging foot. Enumerate them endlessly dwell on two designs.

Rocking chair. The most comfortable invention of man. Just sit or lie down and enjoy a slight wiggle.

Products such as stools, due to the creative inventions of the designers, are not always durable and reliable. Like, for example, this design.

It may look beautiful, but do not make such an item yourself.

It all starts with an idea, developing a project drawing and preparing materials with tools. First of all, you need to create a layout, stock up on cardboard for designing a future product.

ATTENTION!Make patterns from cardboard, 1: 1 ratio, then use these cuttings to draw cut lines on plywood sheets. This will save time, material and money.

Tools and materials

After the layout design of the chair is ready, we proceed to the creation, for this it is necessary:

  1. Plywood sheet (15-20 mm thick, select sheet sizes based on the drawing).
  2. Jigsaw and woodwork.
  3. Cutting machine or sandpaper.
  4. Glue (Epoxy glue in this case, the best choice).
  5. Bolts with nuts 6-8 mm. (It can be replaced with small self-tapping screws, but not reliably).
  6. A set of stationery (pencil, eraser, ruler, etc.).
  7. Paint and varnish substances.
  8. Drill or screwdriver.
  9. Vise or clamps.

IMPORTANT! Plywood does not like moisture, should be stored in a dry, ventilated area. With high humidity, the sheets will begin to swell and delaminate.

Which plywood to choose

When choosing plywood, it is necessary to take into account the size of the product, and the load that the chair can withstand:

  1. Carefully inspect each sheet in the store for swelling or peeling due to improper storage.
  2. Children's furniture can be made of sheets with a thickness of 5-7 mm.
  3. For large structures, such as a bench, use plywood with a thickness of 15-25 mm or, if necessary, reinforce the structure in 2 layers.
  4. Select the dimensions of the sheet according to the drawing. This will save budget and less waste.

For the manufacture of 1 sheet of plywood 2.5 m * 2.5 m and a thickness of 15 mm. It is possible to use a smaller sheet size. The design of this chair is quite simple and does not require special skills, all components are cut out and fastened according to the drawing.

First of all, we create a layout from cardboard or thick paper, from cardboard you can assemble the product and see how it will look in the finished version. Next, transfer the stencil to a sheet of plywood, outline and cut it out.

Sawing plywood is a very finicky process, because of its fibrous nature, the sheet can delaminate and break, it is necessary to use a jigsaw or do it manually.

IMPORTANT! Lay out the stencil with details on a sheet compactly. This will save material and reduce waste. Working with an electric jigsaw is very dusty, put on a respirator and protect others.

After cutting, process all sections with a machine or sandpaper. In the places where parts are attached, drill holes for the bolts. Treat all components with a paint and varnish substance and proceed with assembly. At the joints without the need for bolts, make a connection with glue.

At the end of the assembly, seal all joints and residual holes with a putty or pour with furniture glue, then paint the finished product in the required color, or varnish.

The creation of a rocking chair is no different from the previous one, only the foot changes, instead of a solid stop we create a smooth slope. As with any design, it is necessary to create a drawing of the future product. To create a chair we need:

  1. Plywood sheet (Parameters as per original drawing)
  2. The minimum sheet thickness for this product is 15-20 mm.
  3. Bar 30 * 50mm (length according to the drawing)
  4. Screws

The entire drawing is transferred to the pattern and a stencil is created. Further, according to the prepared samples of parts made of cardboard or paper, components are looming on a plywood sheet. Do not forget about the correct cutting of the material and thorough processing of the paintwork substance.

ATTENTION! For a more aesthetic appearance of the product, drill holes for self-tapping screws so that the caps do not protrude outward.

All parts of the chair are attached to 2 supports using self-tapping screws, in the future, the residual holes are smeared and painted.
